10月24日、25日上午，安徽阜阳、河南新乡、开封等地传出不明巨响，有居民以为发生地震，但相关部门称并无地震发生；有民众认为发生事故，当局也予以否认。直到目前，巨响原因成谜。
据《极目新闻》、《新黄河》等媒体报导，安徽阜阳太和县居民称，24日晚上约6时半，他在车内玩手机时突然听到巨响，车辆也跟着震动。他本以为是其车被撞，但附近并无任何车辆，猜测是受巨大声响影响；他随后在微信群组中得悉，原来其他市区的民众亦听到巨响。
安徽省阜阳市多位居民称，24日晚上、25日上午听到两次巨响。
阜阳市地震局回应称，24日当晚并没有地震发生，至于25日上午发生的巨响，其原因还仍在调查中。
另外，10月25日，河南多地亦传出巨响。河南新乡的一位网友称，起初以为是打雷，但开窗户看外面未见下雨，过了一会儿，空中传来一阵机械轰隆声音，而且有物体在上空盘旋，质疑巨响可能是音爆。（所谓音爆，是当战斗飞机已超过音速飞行所产生的声音密度波叠在机身后方，所形成的音锥。）
除新乡外，河南开封、驻马店、商丘等地在25日皆有巨响传出。开封应急管理局称，当地并未接到安全事故报告，也未接到安全生产举报信息，提醒市民不要谣传，保持正常生活秩序。
网传视频显示，阜阳市居民听到巨响后，有的愣住，有的则跑出去了解情况，狗也不停地叫。
河南、安徽巨响均登上大陆百度热搜榜，不少网友催促当局公布巨响原因，不要“说了像没说一样。”
此外，浙江、湖南、内蒙等地网友也表示听到巨响。
