美国多个媒体报导，美国新任国会议长麦卡锡今年春季将访问台湾，五角大厦正为此预做准备。面对媒体询问，台湾总统蔡英文并未回应。民进党立委王定宇则表示，去年他已代表立法院长游锡堃前往华府致送访台邀请函。
美国政治新闻网站“酒杯新闻”（Punchbowl News）、《纽约邮报》及霍士新闻（Fox News）等多间美媒报导指，美国国防部正为麦卡锡（Kevin McCarthy）的外国行程预做准备，包含今年稍后可能访台的行程。拜登政府官员预期，麦卡锡将在春季的某个时点访台。
大年初三（24日），蔡英文前往陆军特指部一个基地视察，被媒体追问麦卡锡是否会访台时，并未回应这一问题。外交部则回应传媒表示，外交部目前没有相关消息。
王定宇：去年9月发邀请函
自由亚洲电台报导，上个会期担任立法院外交及国防委员会召集委员的民进党立委王定宇表示，去年9月他代表立法院长游锡堃，前往华府送交立法院邀请函，诚挚邀请麦卡锡访台。
王定宇说，对于好朋友的来访“我们诚挚欢迎”，中国反弹打压，或以无理取闹方式阻挠台湾对外关系、国际友人访台，只会适得其反。
侯友宜欢迎 马英九保留
新北市长侯友宜表示，欢迎麦卡锡访台，但更重要的是，区域和平稳定是大家的共同信念。
前总统马英九则态度保留，以前美国国会议长佩洛西访台引起中共围台军演为由，认为须征询民意。
57岁的共和党籍众院议长麦卡锡，拥有16年联邦众议员资历，属对中强硬派。2020年5月，他筹组“中国工作小组”（China Task Force）对抗中共威胁，今年1月当选议长后，他兑现选举承诺，推动众院成立中国委员会，更获得民主党的强力支持。
众院前议长佩洛西（Nancy Pelosi）去年访台结束后，中共随即加强在台湾周边举行军演，作为恫吓战略，高层官员也批评佩洛西此行违反美国长期的对台政策。麦卡锡当时公开呼吁佩洛西应该去台湾，并透露，若他当选议长，也有意率团访台；若果真成行，麦卡锡将成为1997年以来第3位访台的美国国会议长。
麦卡锡担任共和党领袖期间多次为台执言，包括：表态支持台湾参与国际组织、呼吁美方加速对台军售等；2016年蔡英文当选总统时，麦卡锡也特别推文恭贺。
