人民幣兌美元匯率創下28年來最差的年度表現，雖然北京當局改變了「清零」防疫政策，但中國經濟仍未好轉，人民幣是否在新的一年繼續貶值？目前觀點各異。
2022年12月30日，中國央行和國家外匯管理局發布公告稱，自2023年1月3日起將延長銀行間外匯市場交易時間，由9:30-23:30調整至為9:30-次日3:00。包括人民幣外匯即期、遠期、掉期、貨幣掉期和期權全部交易品種。此次調整將覆蓋亞洲、歐洲和北美市場更多交易時段。
12月30日，在岸人民幣兌美元匯率收於月內高點，報6.8983。離岸人民幣兌美元匯率收報6.9197。
2022年在岸人民幣兌美元匯率下跌8.31%，離岸人民幣兌美元匯率下跌8.57%。創下自1994年中國統一市場和官方匯率以來的最大年度跌幅。
鑑於美聯儲收緊貨幣政策，美元走強是今年人民幣承壓的主要因素之一。除了美元升值因素，中國經濟狀況也促使人民幣貶值。今年以來，COVID-19（新冠病毒）疫情引發經濟放緩。
理論上，人民幣貶值有利於中國的出口企業，但是並非如此。出口企業靠人民幣貶值增加了收入，但如果使用過多的進口原材料、零部件，也會因為人民幣貶值而增加支出，導致利潤降低。
在此期間，中國央行不斷干預人民幣匯率的走勢，包括調降外匯存款準備金率、下令國有銀行在離岸市場操作等等，人民幣兌美元匯率略有上漲。
對於未來的經濟走勢，中國國家金融與發展實驗室理事長、中國社科院學部委員李揚12月30日在「2022鳳凰網財經峰會」上表示，2023年全球經濟走弱將是大概率事件，通脹持續、債務增大、利率上升、財政狀況惡化等是造成經濟走弱的主要因素。在這種環境下，中國經濟當然也會受到不利影響，特別是明年上半年，經濟下行壓力依然很大。
北京師範大學經濟與工商管理學院金融系教授賀力平認為，把握2023年人民幣對美元匯率的走勢，一是需要高度關注美元指數的走勢，尤其關注歐元區和日本的通脹形勢及其動向，二是需要關注美國通脹形勢變動和美聯儲貨幣政策的舉動。
賀力平指出，也不能簡單認為，人民幣匯率走勢全由外部因素決定，國內因素毫無作用。事實上，國內因素也很重要。展望2023年，如果防疫措施控制完全放開，中國居民出境游逐漸恢復，其對外匯需求將會出現增長。到時，如果對外貨物貿易趨於平衡（即順差減少），那麼未來人民幣也會面臨一定貶值壓力。
