澳洲政府正在审查临时技术移民的收入门槛。一家澳洲智库建议将之从2013年以来的5.39万澳元提高到7万澳元，来帮助国家引进真正需要的移民人才。商业团体希望将其提高到6万澳元，而工会认为应该提高到9万澳元。
技术移民的收入门槛是澳洲雇主担保一名临时技术移民时必须提供的最低工资。Grattan研究所分析认为，对临时技术移民来说，7万澳元的年收入门槛有助于吸引护士、教师和物理治疗师等专业人才来澳洲工作。
这家智库称，“临时技术签证持有者通常都很年轻，典型年龄为31岁，还处于职业生涯的早期阶段。澳洲25到34岁的全职雇员，工资中位数为每年72,774澳元。而9万澳元大约是澳洲全职雇员的平均收入，但拿到这个级别薪水的人平均是40岁。”因此，7万澳元应该是个合理数字，可以确保他们获得应得的薪水，又非望尘莫及的高薪工作。
Grattan研究所表示，一年5.39万澳元的收入门槛导致越来越多的移民从事技术含量较低的工作，“7万澳元的收入门槛会把许多低薪工作排除在担保范围之外，例如餐饮酒店服务业和零售业，但这些工作恰恰面临着很大的被剥削风险，即使他们拿到永居，薪水也不会上涨多少。这种持续剥削现象会打击公众对临时技术移民以及更广泛移民项目的支持。”
澳洲内政部长Clare O’Neil在11月初宣布将对澳洲“年久失修”的签证系统进行全面改革，以更好地解决劳动力短缺的问题并提高澳洲对移民的吸引力。前财政部长Martin Parkinson正在主导对移民系统的审查。
