在大小上不要太挑
皇家园艺学会（Royal Horticultural Society）首席园艺师巴特（Guy Barter）认为，拿到一块菜地的办法是，不要太挑剔。
他说：“您只需要很小的空间就可以开始种菜。联系您当地的菜地协会，看看现有成员愿不愿意分享他们的菜地。新园丁通常在较小的土地上，能取得更好的成果，因为更易于管理。”
哈里斯还建议，询问当地政府，是否有临时菜园，例如，在指定用于未来开发的土地上。
全国各地散布著数以千计的私人土地，通常隐藏在繁忙的城市地区。这些地块大小不一，通常比传统的菜园地块小，事实上，一些“微型地块”只有三平方米。
