新西兰总理阿德恩周四（19日）突然宣布请辞，她的任期最迟于2月7日结束。她宣布下一次选举将于10月14日举行，在此之前，她将继续担任议员。她所属的工党将于下周日（22日）举行党团投票，选出新任党魁，当选者会成为下任总理。
据法广报导，阿德恩工党会议上表示，她已在尽可能长的时间内，倾尽全力付出。她说：”我只是没有精力再干四年了”。
42岁的阿德恩于2017年10月26日就任总理，是新西兰史上第3位女总理，也是当地自1850年代以来的最年轻领袖，她于2020年大选再次带领工党取得大胜，成功连任总理。
最近的民意调查显示，在下次选举中，中右翼联盟将比工党更具优势。但阿德恩女士保证说，这并不是她离开的原因。
她说：”我离开不是因为我相信我们不能赢得下一次选举，而是因为我相信我们能够，而且将会赢得这个选举”。
法新社报导称，新西兰副总理格兰特-罗伯逊立即明确表示无意角逐党魁之位。
而即将离任的总理阿德恩保证，她的辞职的背后没有任何秘密原因。她说：“我之所以离开，是因为这样的特权地位伴随着巨大的责任”。自己“有责任知道什么时候你是合适的领导人，也知道什么时候你不是”。
