中共喉舌《环球时报》在一篇社论中警告堪培拉，虽然习近平没有当面向阿尔巴尼斯提起AUKUS，但不要误解这种沉默。“可能是由于日程安排太紧，或者仅仅是为了促成更友好的气氛……澳大利亚总理不能也不应该将其视为中国对该协议不关心的信号。”
环时的社论还威胁到，”如果堪培拉选择无视北京对AUKUS的关注，那么该协议将继续成为中澳关系中的一根刺。”
据澳洲人报报道，中国代表日前在日内瓦举行的国际原子能机构会议（IAEA）表示，核动力潜艇协议将破坏核扩散条约。党媒《中国日报》随即也加入了攻势，称AUKUS是 “核扩散行为”，将 “创造一个可怕的先例”。并说如果总部设在联合国的IAEA不反对这项协议，那么它本身就会成为《核不扩散条约》的违反者，”成为非法转让军事用途核材料的帮凶”。
自2021年9月澳大利亚、美国和英国公布AUKUS协议以来，北京一直致力于破坏该协议。法国总统马克龙在上周的G20 峰会上试图利用这种反对，争取恢复900亿澳元的澳法国常规潜艇合同，该合同被澳方单方放弃。马克龙说，AUKUS协议有可能挑起与中国的核冲突。
前总理莫里森把AUKUS协议视为他担任总理期间的主要成就之一，是北京对澳大利亚日益增长的胁迫促使堪培拉转而选择了核动力潜艇。
澳洲国防部长Richard Marles上周曾表示，核动力潜艇将为澳大利亚提供 “无可比拟的海上监视和保护的战略优势”。”这种能力将彻底改变澳大利亚国防军的效力，并大大增强我们的主权。”
