據澳新社報道，澳洲昆士蘭大學研究所發現，Covid-19病毒會在大腦中激活與帕金森症相同的炎症反應，更有導致腦神經退化性的風險。
由 Trent Woodruff 教授和 Eduardo Albornoz Balmaceda 博士帶領的生物醫學團隊和病毒學家們已經將這個研究結果發表在科學雜誌《分子精神病學》上。
該學術論文在簡述中寫道：「COVID-19病毒最先被發現可能導致呼吸系統上的疾病，但後續的研究指出該病毒可能激活一種蛋白質（NLRP3），該蛋白質已被發現是引發大腦炎症、開啟腦神經元退化反應的主要酵素。」
Woodruff 教授表示，「我們研究了病毒對大腦免疫細胞『小膠質細胞』的影響，這些細胞是參與帕金森氏症和阿爾茨海默氏症等腦部疾病進展的關鍵細胞。」他指出人類小膠質細胞在被COVID-19感染後，變得更「積極」地激活NLRP3蛋白，「這個激活反應會在大腦中產生『火』 （炎症），從而『緩慢和持續』的殺死神經元」。
Albornoz Balmaceda 博士解釋道：「這是一種沉默的殺手，因為很多年你都看不到任何外在症狀。這可以解釋為什麼一些感染過 Covid-19 的人更容易出現類似於帕金森病的神經系統症狀。」
研究人員還發現，如果大腦中已經存在與帕金森氏症相關的蛋白質，則會加劇 Covid 感染的影響力。Woodruff也解釋道：「如果有人已經患了帕金森氏症、阿爾茨海默氏症甚至是痴呆症，那如果感染COVID-19病毒可能就像給大腦中的『火』澆上更多的燃料。」
昆士蘭生物醫學研究所目前已經在研發一種抑制NLRP3的藥物，該藥物可以阻斷由COVID-19病毒激活的炎症。Balmaceda認為：「這些藥物基本上起到『滅火』的作用。在動物實驗中顯示，可以有效的減少炎症，有可能成為未來預防腦神經元退化性病變的治療方式。」
Woodruff教授補充道，「雖然看起來這是一種治療COVID-19病毒感染的新方式，但需要進一步研究和觀察，確保對健康不會產生不可估量的長期影響。」
新的變種COVID病毒再席捲澳洲
COVID病毒的變種XBB在短短一周內已將澳洲感染病例的人數從五分之一增值一半。世界衛生組織（WHO）10月底發表的報告表示，目前XBB病毒株已經在全球至少17個國家再掀另一波的感染高潮。
「目前仍沒有數據表示，這株病毒是否會導致更嚴重的死傷」，世界衛生組織首席科學家Soumya Swaminathan 說。
WHO總幹事稱，目前疫情中的XBB病毒株是最讓人擔心的，因其是300多個變種病毒的混合體，能繞過現有的抗體，讓曾經感染或接種過疫苗的人群再次感染，因此會掀起另一波感染浪潮。」
據悉，XBB病毒株幾周前在新加坡開始大規模傳播，澳洲感染人數上周記錄了超過3萬例並不斷增加。
公共衛生專家、Johns Hopkins健康安全中心專家Amesh Adalja向The Daily Beast說，「目前沒有恐慌的必要，疫苗接種仍然是抵抗病毒最好的方式，如果接種過疫苗的人再次感染COVID，患重病的可能性會小很多。」
WHO公布的數據顯示，全世界每周都有 8千至9千人死於COVID感染。Swaminathan 表示，世衛組織目前對COVID-19仍是大流行（Pandemic），這意味的所有防疫預防的措施都應繼續。
他表示：「全世界各國對COVID仍應該保持警戒，不應該放鬆。」
