隨着中國經濟重新開放，中國主要航空公司增加了與澳洲間的航班來往，墨爾本機場將增聘近2000個工作崗位，以應對國際入境旅客激增。
據《悉尼晨鋒報》報導，中國南方航空公司、中國東方航空公司和中國國際航空公司均將回歸澳洲市場，使機場國際運力在兩個月內達到COVID-19疫情前的80%，致使澳洲各機場急需增加勞動力。
墨爾本機場首席執行官Lorie Argus表示，隨着國際航空公司競相跟上消費者的需求，該機場正準備增加國際客運和貨運服務的數量。
Argus說，上個月發現從墨爾本出發的航班有令人難以置信的高載率。「隨着中國航空公司恢復飛往墨爾本的航班，越南航空公司推出直飛胡志明市的服務，以及澳洲航班返回香港，我們預計在未來幾個月將進一步增加運力。」
中國南方航空公司將是首家恢復每日飛往悉尼和墨爾本的航空公司，從2月1日起每天都有從澳洲返回廣州的航班。
自澳大利亞國際邊界重開以來，墨爾本機場已僱傭4000多人，但中國航班重新返回意味着在地面處理、零售、清潔和其他業務方面還需2000名工作人員。
去年12月有逾250萬乘客通過墨爾本機場，是自COVID-19大流行開始以來最高單月人數，很大程度上歸因於國際航空公司增加運力。該月旅客數約為2019年同期的79%。
在聖誕節假期間旅行的250萬人中，180萬人乘坐國內航班，766,439人乘坐國際航班。12月的總數比11月多12萬，因為卡塔爾航空公司和聯合航空公司等繼續增加了往返澳大利亞的航班數量。
墨爾本機場去年的起飛和降落次數比2021年多10萬次，但仍比疫情大流行前的水平低約20%，因為部分航空公司對過快增加國際服務持謹慎態度。
