去年年底，中國爆發大規模疫情。多方消息稱，民眾死傷慘重，但中國當局並不承認，在官方報導中，死亡者寥寥無幾。英國廣播公司（BBC）實地走訪山西省北部，發現當地許多農村地區受疫情衝擊，整體狀況十分嚴重。由於醫療設施匱乏，很多人在家中去世。當地做棺材的業者說近幾個月沒時間停下來；買棺材的村民則稱，有時棺材會全部賣光，殯葬業還因此發了一筆小財。
據BBC報導，著名流行病學家吳尊友稱，自中國去年12月取消限制措施以來，約80%的人口（超過10億人）已被感染。上周末，中國在不到一周的時間裡報告了1.3萬例與新冠病毒相關的死亡病例，而自去年12月以來，中國已統計到有6萬人死亡。
報導稱，中國官方報導的死亡案例均發生在醫院，而在農村地區，由於醫療設施很少，很多人在家中死亡，這部分數據當局根本沒有統計。
日前，BBC駐中國記者麥笛文（Stephen McDonell）來到山西北部農村採訪，當地棺材生產商和殯葬業者稱，近期的殯葬需求是往年同期的2到3倍。多位業者稱，自己已連續工作了幾個月，期間沒有休息。
還有農民表示，某座村莊裡有數十名老人去世，許多人未用棺槨，被直接埋在農田之中。
BBC的記者還造訪當地一座火葬場，發現該火葬場也十分繁忙，身穿白衣的送葬者捧着親人的骨灰盒一步步往前走。
在另一座村莊，記者看到村民拉着一輛平板車，後面裝滿殉葬用品。他們說，當地對葬禮裝飾的需求激增，是平時的兩到三倍。
近期離世的人太多，幾乎每一個與殯葬業有關的人都將原因歸咎於新冠病毒。
有村民表示，一些老年人生了病，本身就已經很虛弱，感染上新冠後，情況更為嚴重，由於身體老邁，無法撐住。
一位王姓村民介紹稱，她50多歲的嫂子剛剛去世，嫂子有兩個孩子，她本身患有嚴重的糖尿病，感染新冠病毒後，器官開始衰竭。因為她的免疫系統不夠強大，無法倖免於難。
BBC記者沿着鄉路行駛時，注意到路邊有一堆堆上面插着紅色旗子的土堆，一名牧羊的農民證實這些都是新墳。他說：「老人死了，家屬就把他們埋在這兒，人太多了」。
這位農民稱，他們村子有幾千人，目前已有超過40名村民死於新冠病毒。
雖然村子在不斷地死人，但是這位農民卻很豁達，他說，大家還是會照以往的方式慶祝新年，自己的兒子媳婦也會很快回來。
BBC的記者詢問這位農人，是否會擔心家人返鄉可能會導致更多的人染疫。這位農民說：「大家不應該擔心，不要怕！就算你躲起來還是會被傳染，我們大部分人都得過了，現在都很好。」
目前正值中國農曆新年，數以億計、在外漂泊的年輕人都會選擇在此時返鄉和家人團聚。
有消息稱，由於村子裡老年人居多，很多年輕人擔心將病毒帶回村莊，不肯回鄉。但也有年輕人擔心農村家中缺少藥品，匆忙帶藥趕回家鄉。
有專家憂心，返鄉者會加速把新冠病毒散播到更偏遠區域，於是提醒城市居民，若他們的長輩不曾染疫，今年就別返鄉。
